Five Simple Golf Tournament Planning Starter Steps

These time tested steps will help you get the right perspective in planning your golf tournament.

Several years ago, National Golf Foundation research revealed that more than 50,000 fundraising golf events are conducted each year across the United States and that these golf tournaments raise more than $250 million plus a year for worthy causes.

With this kind of money at stake, it is no wonder that many non-profit agencies are turning to annual golf tournament events as a major tool in their fund raising arsenal. A recent search at Yahoo.com and Google.com revealed over 10.5 million results when searching with these key words..."2006 golf tournaments."

Unfortunately most non-profit staffers, while extremely adept at their jobs, are not experienced golf tournament promoters and hiring a golf event planner can cost anywhere from $2,000 -$20,000 dollars. That type of initial outlay of capital is not usually feasible for most profit businesses to spend, let alone non-profit organizations.

Planning and conducting a successful golf tournament is not difficult, it simply requires a little know-how and some organizational skills.

Here are a few tips on how to plan and operate
a golf event that meets your organization's needs:

  1. Develop and effectively use a golf tournament committee and
define roles of each team member.

A golf tournament timeline organizer is a great tool to utilize when planning your event.
You can download a FREE timeline organizer by clicking here.

    a) Designate one person to be the golf tournament director. This person will be the leader and chief organizer
    of the golf tournament.

    b) Designate a committee of others who will be in charge of budgeting, public relations, contacting sponsors, registering participants and volunteers, etc. Have each team member report to the golf tournament director to ensure a smooth process.

  2. Get Organized

    a) Give yourself plenty of time to plan. Start early by finding out how many volunteers will take part and get a firm commitment. Many private clubs allow tee times to be booked up to six weeks in advance, so you're looking at many months of organization. Obviously, the bigger the golf tournament the more time you'll need. The more time you allow, the easier your task will be and in most cases, more profits will be obtainable.

  3. Select a course and a golf tournament playing format.

See www.GolftournamentFormat.com for an extensive explanation
of the various golf tournament formats.

    a) Gauge the playing ability of the participants you will attract and pick a course to match. The last thing you want to do is book a championship style course if the event will have lots of first-time players.

    b) Golf tournaments are either played with a scramble or stroke play golf tournament format. Of the two formats, the four man scramble is by far the most common type of format use in fundraising golf outings.

    c) If the budget permits, engage a golf professional, celebrity or professional athlete to participate in your golf event.

  4. Determine the sources of income for your golf tournament.

Golf events provide fundraisers with an opportunity to make several different revenue streams before, during and after the event. There are many ways to generate revenue from your event including: Entry fees, sponsorships, contributions and contest fees.

  5. Obtain Hole in One insurance and Golf Tournament Gifts, Prizes and Awards

See www.GolfTournamentGifts.info for valuable advice and resources.

    a) Insurance can be purchased to cover prizes offered for a hole in one on a designated hole and additional prizes for other par 3 holes on the course.

    b) Prizes can be trips, cars, boats, etc.HIO prizes are an excellent drawing card to the tournament and they also add more fun and prestige for any size golf event.

Remember, golf tournaments are a great opportunity for any organization anywhere that needs to raise substantial funds quickly and easily. Follow the simple rules listed above and you will far surpass the knowledge of the average golf tournament event planner and this is sure to move your tournament and your organization closer to success. Best of luck to you! And have FUN!
